Free Money (Week 7)

Strategy: Catch people as they are walking in Turlington Plaza, say "good morning" and hand them a $1 bill. I think I will be able to give away all 5 bills.

Giving away free money was harder than I imagined; some people actually refused to take the money.  My prediction was wrong; I was unable to give away all 5 bills.

  1. Good idea -- catch them when they need the money! Why do you think people refused you?

  2. I wasn't satisfied with my first attempt at Starbucks; I wanted to be able to give away all 5 bills. Most of the people who refused me were from an older generation, and I think they tend to have a different mindset about taking things from strangers. So, I tried again in Turlington Plaza, where I would be able to interact with mostly young college students. I was able to give away one more bill, but I still had trouble getting people to take the bills, especially when they saw they were being filmed.

  3. I really do think this reaction is completely understandable. We're so trained to expect a catch, so conditioned to expect that strangers are trying to get us, or trick us, or pull something over on us. It’s kind of sad, really, that we just don’t trust anyone anymore.
I like that you didn’t come up with an elaborate story to justify giving away the dollar, but I think that also makes things harder for you, because if there’s no REASON to take the dollar, why would they, when there’s “all” this potential for it to be a trick?

  4. Hi Isabelle! I thought the second video was really funny when they guy did not want to take the money. I also received very weird responses and honestly did not enjoy this project at all. Go you for being willing to do in in Turlington, I would have been way too nervous! 5. Hi Isabelle,

You seemed very confident in approaching strangers. It's unfortunate that you weren't able to give away all five dollars, but not too unfortunate as you saved some money.

I wonder why young people were not interested in a dollar? Maybe they thought it was some sort of viral "prank" that has become popular recently.

Thanks for sharing! Here's a link to my blog if you want to check it out. http://jamestyrrell.blogspot.com/

  6. You seemed to have a very friendly and confident approach with the assignment. I would also be skeptical if someone came up to me and offered me money without any expectation in return. So it is understandable that some of the people you approached were hesitant. Overall, great work.

  8. Hi Isabelle!
You did a great job with this assignment even though it was an awkward one to do. I feel like many people won't accept money randomly which, is nice because it shows kindness. I thought you had a good strategy by simply asking if they would like a dollar because most people don't stop when being approached. I did not do the assignment so I can't share my link.

  9. Hello Isabelle,

It's really weird how no one wanted to take the dollar. I mean I would've asked you why were you giving me the dollar and just walked away with it lol anyway, great job interacting with the people and attempting to give away the money.

  10. Hey Isabella, great job, isn’t it funny that people were reluctant to take the dollar. Is this a sign of people just being not trusting, anyway I faced similar challenges as well. Thanks for your post.
